Echoing-sand Mountain is located 6km south of Dunhuang city proper, and this ranges of sand dunes winds on from Mogao Grottoes in the east, to Danghe Reservoir in the west,altogether about 40km long,20km wide, rising up at a relative height of dozens of meters.

Mogao Grottoes is situated 25km southeast of Dunhuang city, Gansu province, in Daquan river valley at the foot of Echoing-sand Mountain facing Sanwei Mountain.

The highest peak of the Geladandong, meaning high and steep peak, Mountains is 6 621 meters above sea level. Within an area of 50 kilometers from south to north and 15 to 20 kilometers from east to west, there are over 30 iced peaks whose altitudes are more than 6 000 meters.

This area mainly refers to the South Qinghai Plateau. It includes Guoluo Prefecture, Yushu Prefecture, south part of Huangnan and Hainan Prefecture, and Tanggula Mountain County in Golmud.

The Kunlun Mountain Pass is a very important one along the Qinghai-Tibet highway at the altitude of 4 757 meters. In this area ， there are many snow peaks and mountains.
