What the former Chinese say about "Courage"

Confucius said "An understanding man doesn’t worry, a scholar is not embarrassed and a courageous man is not afraid."But courage doesn’t mean to be stubbornly heedless or combative. "Courage" is rather bound to it ‘cultivation’ of the virtue and the morality. Confucius recognized that his disciple Zilu was courageous enough, but he advised him to keep the sense of the justice always, hand in hand with courage. The bravery doesn’t have a value without the sense of the straightforwardness. To forget the straightforwardness in favor of the profit or nothing to make whereas the justice would like it cannot be called the real courage. The courage that himself in conformity with the morality was always a virtue highly recommended in the traditional culture complicates.

Shijing (The book of the Odes), Daya (The big Odes) and Shumin (The plain people) affirm not to consume the soft, not recracher the difficult, not to torment the weak and the without defense and not to be afraid of the despots and people of power. " [Non official translation]. This poem has been composed to praise and to come with to the battle the famous general Zhong Shanfu of the Xizhou dynasty. The general idea of the poem is that one must not be tempted easily by the soft and tender things, either to reject the difficult things, nor to intimidate the weak and to be intimidated by the strong. The poem blesses the general, protesting that it won’t fail to make apply the decree top deck, that it will succeed in arranging the discussions between the Lords of the war and that it will bring the comfort to the people. It expresses the admiration for a big morality and for the courage to abstain from ridiculing and to make pressure on the modest and the weak all in fearing neither the danger nor the powerful.

In the annals of Aigong of the book Zuo Zhuan, 16th commentary, courage is directed by the straightforwardness" means that it is only while adhering to the morality and the straightforwardness that one can speak of courage. "Courage" must be based on compassion and the straightforwardness"

Confucius often speaks of the courage question. He says, "An understanding man doesn’t worry, a scholar is not embarrassed and a courageous man is not afraid." ("Lun Yu." [The maintenances of Confucius]  . Xianwen [fundamental Questions]). According to Confucius, three qualities that a good man must possess exist and that are also the human state perfects. An understanding and moral person is going to deal the other with kindness and generosity;  it is why she doesn’t know the concern. A prudent person can distinguish the a lot of pain, she won’t be embarrassed therefore. Someone courageous won’t have fear to face calamities, therefore he doesn’t have anything to fear. Someone propertied merely one only of his qualities is already difficult to find, but it is even more difficult to find someone that possesses the three. Confucius said with ingenuousness that he was not able to either to accomplish the three. But his disciple Zi Gong said "Mr. speaks of himself", what meant that it was only the description that Confucius made himself. In his disciple’s mind, Confucius was the incarnation of kindliness, wisdom and courage. If he didn’t possess hiss three qualities, who possessed them?

Confucius also" said A person understanding to certainly of courage, but a courageous person is not necessarily understanding" ("Lun Yu – Xianwen"). This declaration expresses the relation between kindliness" and courage." An understanding person will be rightly surely courageous for a reason, even sacrificing his life for it and it is it the true courage. Some people can seem very courageous, but not in the goal to look for the justice. It can amount to an emotional burst, not necessarily with the c.ur to take care of the other and the kindness.

Confucius also says, "The one that doesn’t act for a just reason at the time of a confrontation doesn’t have what one calls courage" ("Lun Yu – Weizheng" [For the government]) When a person dares not to face the challenge that was destined him that is a sign of cowardice. This affirmation illustrates the relation between the straightforwardness and courage. Nothing to make rightly for a reason is not only a sign of cowardice, it is also a big shame. To face the challenges with nobility and for a just reason is a behavior that is admired a lot in the traditional culture complicates.

In fact courage as speaks the old of it is close to the morals and ethics. In his Dialogue of Li Boo the famous author Known Shi of the dynasty of the Song criticized the kind of silliness that pushes to fight in an excess of rage. He makes the praises of those that were capable to endure the humiliations with visionary aspirations, and believes that they are very courageous. He says these are them that are indeed courageous, those that are not afraid to face a sudden calamity and that don’t infuriate facing the free acts. "It means that he exists to the world of the very courageous people, that the unforeseen disasters don’t frighten, that the injustices don’t make infuriate, as HanXin of the dynasty of the Hans that has to crawl him between a brigand’s legs when he was young. If it had not been capable to endure this humiliation and had decided to kill the hooligan, how would have he can reach success later? This is how one sees that when it is necessary, to endure is the choice wise of a courageous person.

Zhu Jia classifies courage in "courage shabby" and "big courage." He says in hiss book (annotation about the stanzas of the fourth book. Annotation about Meng Zi) "The shabby courage is the result of exaltation, and the big courage is descended of the just principles and the reason." He wants to say that the shabby courage is impulsive, whereas the big courage is based on the morality and the just principles.
