Adulterated milk: first case of indemnification for Sanlu

A child’s parents died after having drunk contaminated milk to the melamine received an indemnity of 200 000 yuan (29 247 dollars), versed by the Sanlu group.

Yongsheng Yi and Jiao Hongfang, villages of the district of Gangu in the Gansu province of the (northwest), Friday confirmed information in the press agency of Xinhua (New China).

Their son died 5 months of May 1st, 2008 of renal failing, caused by the adulterated milk. It is probably about the first victim of milk in powder of Sanlu contaminated to the melamine.

As accepting the indemnity, and Jiao Yi gave up their rights to sue the guilty society.

The scandal of adulterated milk exploded in September 2008. Six babies died and some 296 000 others fell sick.

Beginning December, 861 children were hospitalized for kidney stones or other urinary problems.

Sanlus and 21 other dairy societies offered an indemnity of 200 000 yuan last month for every family of the victims, 30 000 yuan for every family of the seriously sick children, notably affected by kidney stones and renal failing, 2 and 000 yuan for every family of the slightly sick children.

The families who refuse the indemnity must sign a document and keep the right to sue the society.
