223 500 foreign students in China in 2008

The number of foreign students in China reached 223 499 in 2008, either a rise of 14.32% in relation to the previous year, welcomed by 592 establishments of higher education through the country, declared Zhang Xiuqin, responsible of the international cooperation within the the ministry of education, at the time of a press conference Wednesday in Beijing.
"China became a popular destination for the foreign students, thanks to history and to complicate the culture, and to the improvement of the public services for the foreign students", said Zhang Xiuqin.
These last years, the Chinese government increased the amount and the number of the purses granted by the government to the foreign students. In 2008, 13 516 foreign students received purses of the Chinese government, either a yearly rise of 33.15%.
Students benefitting from the purses of the Chinese government can not only make some studies and can live free on the campus, but also to benefit from a special medical insurance, according to the same source.
According to statistics, China invested 500 millions of yuan (about 71.4 million dollars) in favor of the foreign students. Students benefitting from the purses of the government receive between 1 400 and 2 allowances of 000 yuan (200 and enters $ 285) per month.
China also improved the management of the education of the foreign students. China began in last March to establish a data base for all foreign students in China as well as a system of emergency procedures that are destined to them.
The statistics of the ministry of education also showed that Republic of Korea, the United States and Japan in 2008 represented the three bigger groups of foreign students in China.
