The works of renovation of the Palace of the sports of the Capital ended last year. As one the Olympic facilities, this site shelters August 23 and 24, 2008 the competitions of volleyball of the Olympic games of Beijing 2008.

The new Palace of the sports of the Capital welcomed April 16, 2008 the Tournament of volleyball male and female of the clubs of China, one of the Olympic competitions of the set "Good "Beijing luck.

The Palace of the sports of the Capital, situated in the west of Beijing, has been put in service in October 1968. It spread on a total surface of seven hectares, with a built surface of about 40 000 square meters, a length east-west of 122 meters and a north-south width of 107 meters. It counted 18 000 seated places. It was then the biggest palace of the sports of the Chinese capital.

In 2001, in order to welcome the 21th academic world Games, the Palace of the sports of the capital underwent its first renovation, 33 years after its construction. The competitions of gymnastics, basketball and volleyball of this universal student meeting have been organized thus in this site.

To the approach of the JO of Beijing 2008, the Palace of the sports of the Capital has been renovated again and the built surface reached 54 707 square meters. The functions of the different facilities of the palace are now in conformity with the international criterias. Two sides of the competition room have been arranged 12 stalls of spectators, of which two reserved to the handicapped spectators. Besides, the systems of elevator, air-conditioning and sound system have been improved. Besides, a big room reserved to the press has especially been installed on the first floor, and a reserved work zone to the journalists has been arranged at the ground floor.

Han Fushi, general engineer of the project of renovation of the Palace of the sports of the Capital confided that the renovated building could resist an earthquake of eight degrees on the scale of Richter and could be used during again 30 years.
