more than 1000 centenaries in Hainan

The number of people receiving the "hundred-year-old allowance" in the insular province of Hainan (south) will pass the 1 000 next year, according to the provincial department of the civil Business.

According to the same department, this province will count in 2009 about 1 112 centenaries, against 963 currently. The provincial government will provide to each a monthly allowance of 150 yuans (22 dollars) next year.

Among the centenaries, the oldest man is aged of 109 years, according to a local newspaper.

More than 980 000 inhabitants, either 11,68% of the provincial population, are aged of more than 60 years, indicated an official of the department.

The soft climate and the clean environment are considered as the main reasons having made of Hainan "an island of longevity."

According to the international association of the natural medicine, a "region of longevity" is a zone that counts at least 7 centenaries for 100 000 people.

Hainan counts 11,7 centenaries for 100 000 inhabitants.
