How the former Chinese considered the fact to repair his mistakes
The old thought that it was very important to repair his own mistakes. it was a way to cultivate the virtue. It was also an important problem of introspection and cultivation. The old believed that even a saint could make some mistakes. In " the Classics" he is said that hopeless man is not infallible, and that to be capable to correct his mistakes is the noblest of the virtues.
To make a mistake and not to correct it, is therefore, to commit another mistake. Confucius said, " If you know that you made a mistake and that you don't correct it, it is there that you commit a mistake" truly. It is admirable when someone can improve in an active way his behavior. We should act like Zi Lu, one of the most famous disciples of Confucius, " Happy every time that he learned hiss mistakes". It is only when someone is anxious to correct his mistakes that he can improve continually and to become a person of big virtue.
In The Analecteses of Zi Chang 19, Zi Chang, one of the disciples of Confucius, said: " A gentleman's mistakes is as eclipses of sun and moon; when a gentleman makes a mistake, everybody sees it; and when he corrects them, everybody admires it". The mistakes are unavoidable, particularly a gentleman's mistakes. If he can grow better himself, the other will continue to respect it. If he doesn't succeed in acting of the sort or if he makes some efforts to conceal them, then not only he will lose hiss self-esteem but should face the disdain of others also to his consideration.
In the Book of the Mutations, he is said that one must change for the best and repair our mistakes.
He is impossible for whoever not to make any mistakes, but what is crucial that is to correct them in time. Taizhong, the famous emperor of the Tang dynasty, was reputed very for his capacity to accept different suggestions and therefore it was capable to correct his mistakes to the good moment. When he remembered of Wei Zheng, the adviser some that he had had the more confidence, he said: " If you take the copper like mirror, it will help you to adjust your holding, if you take history as mirror, you will see the emergence and the fall of the dynasties; if you take a human being as mirror, you will learn the loss and the gain". to Take " to be human as mirror" mean to take the words and the behaviors of people as references to discover that, no matter that we are reason or right, we must abandon our own idea if the other have some of better; We must recognize and must correct our mistakes if we note that the other behave of the good manner; We will be prudent and attentive if others make some mistakes, so you won't reproduce the same.
In the High commissioner in the China Ancienne, he is said that one must correct his mistakes without hesitation.
Mencius told this history: " There was a man who stole a chicken every day from his neighbor. Someone tells to him that it was not the behavior of a honest man. This man answered to him, " I need time to correct it. First of all I will steal only one chicken per month, instead of one per day, and next year I won't steal more from from it. " He knew that he acted badly. Why didn't he correct his mistake immediately instead of waiting next year? Once you have knowledge of your mistakes, you should take some measures in order to correct them quickly and not to let the things drag.
Read Jiuyuan, a thinker of the Dynasty Song of the South, said, " When someone puts in evidence your mistakes, you must immediately correct them; when you have knowledge of your mistakes, you should not try to conceal them; when you correct your mistakes, you must not be afraid a."
Mencius made the praise of Zi Lu once while saying: " All times where someone signalled to Zi Lu that he had made a mistake, Zi Lu in was very happy". Based on what Mencius said, Read Jiuyuan pulled this conclusion of it and says: " First, you must not be afraid when the other put in evidence your mistakes; secondly, after having learned your mistakes, you should not try to deceive the other and yourselves; finally, you must persevere while constantly correcting your mistakes. " To "be afraid". These words are very important. After you committed a mistake, don't be afraid of the critique, don't be afraid to be embarrassed, and besides, don't be discouraged because of the difficulties that could occur of the process of repair of this mistake. When you will be capable to follow these three stages, your moral criterias will rise continually.
Yan Yuan, a thinker and tutor of the Dynasty Qing, recommended the training of all things and to apply it in his life of every day. He said, " To cultivate your character means to correct your mistakes and to change for the best. " He insisted on the fact that one must apply to oneself of the strict standards.
