Peking is going to double its investments in the renovation of the downtown
Peking is going to doublehits investments next year in the works of renovation of the former buildings of the downtown with a budget of between 1.5 trillion yuan (220.6 millions of dollars) and 2 billions of yuan.
About 20 000 families in the precincts of Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chongwen and Xuanwus, will benefit this project, that will concentrate on the old houses in dangerous condition, declared Wednesday the vice-mayor Chen Gang.
According to the plan, a third of these 20 000 families will move downtown districts of the next year to attenuate the demographic pressure there.

The government said that it had taken care to avoid damage to the traditional aspect of the hutongs in order to preserve their historic and cultural significance.
