China increases in efforts in struggle against poverty

The Council of the business of state (central government of China) decided to prolong the period of use of a fund destined to struggle against poverty in three prefectures appearing among the poorest of the country, and to increase this fund of 200 millions of yuan ( about 30 million dollars) to 300 million yuan, one has learned Saturday of the government’s announcement.

Two of these three prefectures, the prefectures of Hexi and Dingxi, are located in the Gansu province of the (northwest), while the third, the one of Xihaigu, is in the Autonomous Region of the Ningxia Hui, also in the northwest of the country.

These three poor prefectures were the first beneficiary of the programs thrown in 1983 by the state in struggle against poverty, notably a fund of subsidy for the agricultural development.

It is the third time that the Chinese government prolongs the period of use of the fund against poverty in favor of these three regions, that must arrive to thin term in 2008, according to the release.

During the last 25 years, some remarkable progress have been gotten in struggle against poverty in these three prefectures, where the conditions of life of the inhabitants improved in a meaningful manner, specify the release.

End 2007, the number of inhabitants living in the absolute poverty in these three prefectures has been reduced to close to 1.35 million people against 7.84 million people in 1982.

In spite of these considerable progress, the three prefectures remain under-developed even on the economic plan in relation to other regions of the country, and the income of the lower agriculturists is well to the national average, add the release.
