The Laba festival

The 1st day of the 12nd month marks the beginning of the celebrations of the New year Chinese, or Feast of the Spring, in other words the middle of the winter. This tradition, celebrated since more of one thousand years, is called the "Laba" festival.

The Laba festival

Its origin goes back up in the beginning of the dynasty of the Suis, where the boudhisme was to its apogee in China. The temples in the country installed some kitchens to the intention of the poor and the without shelters and organized some activities to distract them. With the passing of the centuries, the Festival Laba lost its religious connotation. It especially became an opportunity for the people to make the feast. Let’s throw an eye with Qing Song on the dishes proposed in the setting of this festival.

To the beginning of the Festival Laba, most households in the regions of the north of China make a special porridge. It is not a plain porridge to the insipid rice. The porridge of Laba is sometimes composed of more than 20 ingredients, of which notably of rice, the beans, the walnuts or the grapes. During last week, the Chinese supermarkets sold tons of seeds destined to the manufacture of porridges.

Stripes to the garlic macerated in vinegar are another tradition, but the patience is necessary. It is now time to begin the dip so that they are ready for the New Year.

Sunday morning, many restaurants prepared their special dish of the 8th day of the 12nd lunar month:  the porridge of Laba.

In the province of the Shaanxi, in the northwest of China, the restaurant of the Temple of Wolong manages more one thousand of table settings during the festival.
