The Chinese fans

The history of the manufacture of the traditional Chinese fans goes back up from the dynasty of the Hans. If today in China, the use convenient of the fans decreased with the arrival of the electric fans and the air conditioner; they remain as the traditional professions, beloved for their artistic quality.

The Chinese fans
China manufactures some fans since 200 JC ave. During the dynasty of the Hans (206 JC ave – 23 after JC), Proclamation Jieyu, a famous woman writer, wrote by admiration of the fans this poetry: ” Silk newly turned of Qi is as half note as snow, the round fans are made of silk bursts as the full moon”.

The supple fans appeared in the Nordic and southern dynasties (420-581) and became very popular during the dynasties of Ming (1368-1644) and of Qing (1644-1911) because it was convenient to carry them.
The first fans in China were in feathers, of this fact the Chinese character for the word ” fan” is the same character that for the word ” feather”. in ancient times the fans were used to maintain the cool air as well as to separate the light of the sun and the dust. Wang Dao, a Prime minister of the Jin dynasty (317-420), says one day ” I often use my fan to defend me of the dust and to cool me in summer”. people of all social conditions liked the fans for their convenient use. The most fluently employees were the fans in leaf of palm. Some fans were decorative, makes with materials of quality and a big artistic expertise. Of the ivory ranges, for example, have been used like homages in the imperial court and have been considered like symb?les of power and high rank.
The use convenient of the fans decreased with the arrival of the electric fans and the air conditioner. As the traditional professions however, the fans are liked again for their artistic value, particularly those with beautiful paintings. The fans can be made of a lot of materials, as ivory, the sandalwood, the feathers, the paper, silk, bamboo…

So there is not that a variety of fan but several, as the ranges of palace, the supple fans, the ranges of black paper, the ranges of feather, the ranges in leaf of palm, the ranges of gong, the ranges of ivory or in sandalwood, etc. The contour of the paintings of the canvas of the fans can be round, to bend…. These fans to the elevated artistic value are usually painted by widely-known artists with the painting, of poetry, of the calligraphy, and some among them are even decorated by ivory, jade or pearls.
