The Chinese dress knew some variations according to the times and the places. he/it is part of the Chinese culture.
THE DYNASTIES OF CHINA
The hanfu is the traditional dress of reference before the Qing dynasty. He/it is different according to the social classes, each having his preferences concerning fashion.
The civilians and the official military
The Chinese civilians as well as the official military had resort to a whole variety of codes to show their rank and their social standing, the most recognized being the Mandarin square. Another code was to fix buttons of color on the top of the hats. Every button indicated the person's social standing (9 different buttons for 9 different ranks). The coifs official Ming could vary.

THE DYNASTY QING (1644-1911)
The arrival of the dynasty Manchurian Qing marks a true rupture with the past. The citizens were asked to adopt a new sartorial style and the port of the ponytail. This new style, tangzhuang (the Tang clothes) implied the port of the changshan (long shirt) for the men, and of the qipao (long ample dress) for the women.
REPUBLIC OF CHINA (1911-1949)
To the reversing of the Qing dynasty, that marks the abolition of the imperial China, the big majority of the Chinese Hans cut their tails, that were obligatory until there. Sun Yat-Sen threw a new style of masculine holdings, composed of jackets and pants, instead of the dresses. Adopted by the students, this new holding is baptized the Zhongshan costume.
For the women, the qipao became a dress close to the body, underlining the shapes (cheongsam), well far from the traditional qipao.
REPUBLIC OF CHINA (1949-1980)
Since the beginning of republic of China, Mao Zedong inspired the Chinese style while imposing his own variant of the Zhongshan costume, named in west, the Mao costume. The widow of Sun Yat-Sen, on his side imposed the cheongsam as the feminine standard holding. To this same period, the former practices, views then as late and out of date, are abolished. This is how the bandaging of feet was forbidden as well in China that in west.

The DRESS OF THE CHINA CONTEMPORAINE (1980 TO TODAY)
Since the abandonment of holding standard of the Communist period, during the years 1980, the Chinese fashion evolved to the rhythm of the rest of Asia of the East. The urban fashion seems very centered on the big marks. In the big urban centers, especially in Shanghai, one observes a very western look, abandoning holdings more relaxed to the profit of the more official holdings.
