Entry from: Tunxi, China Entry Title: “Hongcun” Entry: “Today, since Jeff, Jessica and I wished to prevent crazy crowds of Chinese tourists at Huangshan and because we have been unsure of the weather conditions we decided to just go to Hongcun. Jessica, a girl that works at the hostel, and Marjolijn, a dutch backpacker, came along with us. Hongcun is an old village in the countryside that is also a well-known tourist spot. I had observed this place in pictures when researching the China trip and it looked genuinely picturesque. The entire village, when viewed from above, is supposed to resemble a bull. The most renowned spot is in the center of the village where there exists a big reservoir of water that the village uses as its water supply. This huge “pond” is supposed to be the bull’s stomach. We walked through several of the narrow streets and admired the old architecture. I was amazed to see that people nonetheless inhabited this village. Most of the people are descendants of a certain family members that have lived in the village for a lot of generations. Undoubtedly the largest income they recieve now is from tourists, but that does not alter the reality that they seem to live a rather simple way of life.
