I would contact the Embassy of China in London. Actually, if you are just going as a tourist your travel agent should be able to handle it. I can’t recall the exact fee, but it was not outrageous. You don’t need to appear. Allow 30 days, but it will be available before that. Just Google for the embassy closest to you.

China Visa Related Information
According to the Law of the People’s Republic of China Concerning the Administration of Foreigners Entering and Leaving the Country, foreign tourists must apply for visas at China’s foreign affairs offices, consulates or other organizations authorized by the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A group of five tourists or more can apply for a group tourist visa. This is usually handled by a travel agency organizing groups. People coming to China from countries which have visa agreements with China (such as agreements which exempt tourist groups from visas) are treated in accordance with these agreements.

OK. If you’re near London, Manchester or Edinburgh, then you can go and do it yourself. It costs £30 for a single entry visa which lasts 60 days I think (from when you enter China). It can be as quick as a day but you need to ass £20 to the cost for same-day service. For 1 working day, it’s £15 extra. Or it is 2-3 working days which is covered by the £30. Most travel agents should be able to do it on your behalf too but I don’t know what they charge. See http://www.chinese-embassy.org.uk/eng/sgxx/t27049.htm and

for more information.

at least in the u.s.you cannot submit your visa application on your own but have to go thru companies which take your application and arrange the visa for a nominal fee.
